Christmas is proof that God gives attention to people who are poor, weak, and lowly. Look at the whole stories of Christmas that are recorded in the Bible, all of them showed evidence of God’s partiality to those who are not regarded by people.

Let’s start with Zechariah and Elizabeth.

THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years (Luke 1:5-7).

The Bible recorded that Zechariah and Elizabeth were the couples who were perfect spiritually. But in that perfect life, there was a flaw which was a disgrace in their time, namely: they do not have any children. Elizabeth was barren; and even worse, back then they were already very old.

So the hope to have a child was completely closed. The dream to have a ‘baby’ has been buried many years ago. And they accepted their fate, that there is an unresolved disgrace in their lives.

At that time women who were not able to bear children were considered to be cursed. It was a disgrace that could become a scorn and the talk of the town in Zechariah’s life, and especially Elizabeth’s.

They may be vermins in their time, but when Jesus was about to be born into the world, the first person that was visited by an angel was Zechariah. The angel told him that his wife would give birth to a child and must be named John. He will open the way for the coming of Jesus.

Resignation to fate in a very long time had killed Zechariah faith and trust, so he had trouble believing the news conveyed by the angel Gabriel, and that’s why he became dumb until John was born.

In that pre-Christmas time, God raised their life and eliminate their disgrace. This is proof that God defends those who are despised by human eyes.

Elizabeth praised the Lord:

“Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men” (Luke 1:25)

Zechariah also praised him:

“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people” (Luke 1:68).

If you have a disgrace in your life, do not be afraid! God cares for your life and He is on your side! He would abolish your disgrace and bring deliverance to you! Blessed be the name of the Lord!

The second person who was visited by an angel and was involved in the event of Christmas (the birth of Jesus) is Maria.

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary (Luke 1:26-27).

Who was Mary? He is a simple woman, not a noble descendant, not a person who was respected in the community. She was chosen by God to give birth to Jesus. That’s why she praised the Lord:

“And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name” (Luke 1:46-47).

All this time the low people are very unlikely to rise. No chance at all to rise. But God will give attention to that kind of people, and He will do great deeds to bring them to higher ground.

This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men (Daniel 4:17).

The third person who was visited by an angel to be involved and protect Christmas event (the birth of Jesus) was Joseph (Matthew 1:18-25). Who was Joseph? We knew him as a carpenter. A very simple person but had a sincere heart.

He was chosen by God to be the physical father of Jesus Christ. From a completely unknown became a very well-known person throughout the world, simply because of the selection and work of God in his life.

Another group of simple people who were visited by angels to preach the message of Christmas was the shepherds (Luke 2: 8-20).

The last story about Christmas was the Magi. This was the only group of dignitaries who received the news of Christmas at that time. There were still some exceptions compared to other stories.

They live far away from the place of Jesus’ birth. And while others are visited by angels, they were only visited by His star (Matthew 2:1-12).

All Christmas stories show God’s partiality to those who were weak and small who fear God. God is no respecter of persons, but he sided with the poor and the helpless.

A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation (Psalms 68:5).

God the Defenders of the Weak, is on the side of the weak, rise up and be strong!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
